Exfoliating scrubs can damage skin- but are all scrubs bad?

Spread the love

Exfoliating scrubs or physical exfoliation can be used to get rid of the dead skin cells that build up on the skin and by doing that we get the smoother, softer skin, but is it the right way to get smoother skin? Do you know scrubbing can be really damaging to the skin?

It can over exfoliate you skin or instead of exfoliation it gives you small tears or scratch on the skin which finally leads to scarring of the skin. If you are using it on acne prone skin or sensitive skin, there is higher chance of increasing acne, redness, inflammation, or irritation to the skin which will lead to hyperpigmentation, skin darkening.

Is there any gentler scrub that you can use on your face?

Exfoliating scrubs are injurious to your skin. Scrubbing your face is very different than scrubbing your body. Our body skin is much thicker than the face. The face skin cannot tolerate harsh scrubbing. Surely you don’t want to injure your skin by that. Exfoliating scrubs like walnut scrub, apricot scrub do not have soft edges even in powder form. They are very damaging to the skin and constant use of such scrubs can give you micro erosions that lead to trans epidermal water loss, redness, inflammation, irritation. Avoid using scrubs which have ingredients like walnut or apricot

However, if you really want the scrubbing experience and looking for a gentle yet effective scrub, then the ingredients that you can look for are jojoba esters, rice, almond, sugar. They have softer edges and you are more likely to get the scrubbing experience without injuring your skin.

Alternative of exfoliating scrubs or physical exfoliation:

If you really want to go for exfoliation then the gentler way to get rid of your dead skin cells is chemical exfoliation where we use aha, bha, pha. Chemical exfoliation is way safer than physical exfoliation. Although chemical exfoliation is safer for the skin but don’t go overboard with it. Sometimes over exfoliation damages the skin. Do not worry. To know more about over exfoliation and how to avoid it read my blog on over exfoliation.
